Sales tax across 1 North American country

United States has no national sales tax: the 34 state rates held run from 2.9% (Colorado) to 7.25% (California), and 6 more are held with none. Every figure links to its official source, with the date we last checked it.

Every figure names the official instrument it came from, the date it takes effect and the date we last checked it against that source. Where no single figure applies, we say so rather than publish one.

1 of these 1 countries carry no single figure for this instrument — the rate is risk-rated, set by the employer, or the instrument fixes no one number. Each says which, on its own page. We do not fill those with an average.

Not listed: The Bahamas, Canada, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, El Salvador — Countries that levy sub-national sales tax instead of a national value-added tax. The United States is the only one: its rates are set by state (and by county and city beneath that), which is why this series carries subdivisions rather than a single national rate. Everywhere else the equivalent charge is a national VAT or GST and is served as `vat`.. That is an absence in the law, not a gap in the data.
