What this value means
All-items CPI rose 2.8% year over year in June 2026, decelerating from 3.2% in May. This is the freshest possible reading — the release landed on 20 July 2026, the same day as last_confirmed. Drivers: the deceleration was led by gasoline, which rose 20.5% y/y in June versus 33.2% in May; excluding gasoline, CPI was unchanged from May at 2.2%. On a month-over-month basis the all-items index FELL 0.4% in June (not seasonally adjusted), the largest monthly decline since December 2024; on a seasonally adjusted basis it fell 0.1%, the first decline since April 2025 (-0.2%). The headline sits above the Bank of Canada's 2% inflation target but inside its 1-3% control range, and the Bank held the policy rate at 2.25% five days before this print. Two measurement caveats matter for anyone comparing 2026 figures to 2025: (a) the temporary federal GST/HST holiday of 14 December 2024 to 15 February 2025 mechanically depressed the price level in those months and then unwound, producing base-year effects that distorted year-over-year readings through February 2026 — Statistics Canada explicitly attributes February 2026's drop to 1.8% to the expiry of that effect; (b) the CPI basket was updated in 2026 on 2025 expenditure weights. Statistics Canada also publishes the Bank of Canada's preferred core measures (CPI-trim, CPI-median, CPI-common) in Table 18-10-0256-01; those are not served here — this series is headline all-items. statcan.gc.ca serves clean HTML and is reliably fetchable; releases follow a fixed monthly schedule roughly three weeks after month-end.
