What this value means

Art. 148 (as amended): feriados de PAGO OBLIGATORIO are 1 ene, 11 abr, Jueves y Viernes Santos (2-3 Apr in 2026; Easter Sunday is 5 Apr), 1 may, 25 jul, 15 ago, 15 set and 25 dic — nine days in 2026. Feriados de PAGO NO OBLIGATORIO are 2 ago, 31 ago (added by Ley 10050 de 25 oct 2021) and 1 dic (Ley 9803 de 19 may 2020, which also removed 12 oct as a feriado — it is now only a school commemoration). NO Monday transfers apply in 2026: the traslado-a-lunes scheme was a transitorio added by Ley 9875 (16 jul 2020, amended by Leyes 10396 y 10438) covering only 2020-2024, so every feriado is observed on its natural date; additionally Ley 10438 (1 feb 2024) mandates that 25 de julio is always celebrated on its actual date. In 2026 four feriados fall on weekends without compensation: 11 abr (Sat), 25 jul (Sat), 15 ago (Sat), 2 ago (Sun); 31 ago falls on a Monday naturally. Pay rules: on a pago-obligatorio feriado workers rest with full pay, and work performed that day is paid double; pago-no-obligatorio feriados are only paid if worked (single rate for weekly-paid non-commerce workers) — monthly/fortnightly-paid workers effectively have all 12 covered. The MTSS calendar PDF (mtss.go.cr/temas-laborales/feriados/feriados_calendario_2026.pdf) corroborates but the MTSS site was Cloudflare-blocked at confirmation; the list above is taken from the statutory text on SCIJ. 2027 EXTENSION (2026-07-30): the 12 feriados of Codigo de Trabajo art. 148 - nine with obligatory pay and three without (2 and 31 August, 1 December). NO holiday is transferred in 2027: the Monday-transfer schedule in Ley 9875 was a closed transitorio opening 'por unica vez' with a hand-written year-by-year list that ended at 11 April 2024, and it has fully expired with no successor. Costa Rica also grants NO compensatory day when a feriado coincides with the weekly rest day, so Juan Santamaria (11 April) and the Annexation of Nicoya (25 July), both Sundays in 2027, and Labour Day and Christmas, both Saturdays, are simply absorbed. The Annexation of Nicoya is additionally non-transferable by express statute (Ley 10438). WATCH: a bill introduced in May 2026 would move five of these feriados to Mondays from 2026-2027; it had not passed as at 30 July 2026 and would have to override Ley 10438's non-transfer mandate for 25 July.
