What this value means

CPI-U all items rose 3.5 percent over the 12 months ended June 2026 before seasonal adjustment; the index level was 333.952 (1982-84=100) against 322.561 in June 2025. On the month the NSA index fell 0.3 percent, driven by energy, which dropped 5.7 percent in June after rising 3.9 percent in May, 3.8 percent in April and 10.9 percent in March - the energy swing is why the headline rate fell sharply from 4.2 percent in May. CORE DIFFERS MATERIALLY: all items less food and energy (CUUR0000SA0L1E) was 336.882 in June 2026 against 328.364 in June 2025, i.e. 2.6 percent YoY - roughly 0.9 points below headline. Note the Federal Reserve's 2 percent target is defined on the PCE price index published by the Bureau of Economic Analysis, not on CPI; the two indices differ in scope and weighting and CPI typically runs above PCE. CPI-W (urban wage earners) is the series used for Social Security COLA and differs again. DATA GAP: the October 2025 CPI was never published - BLS footnotes it 'Data unavailable due to the 2025 lapse in appropriations' - so any October 2025 comparison is impossible and October 2026 YoY will also be uncomputable from published NSA levels.
